Mainstreaming

Mainstreamed students spend most of their school day in classes with hearing students, however, their home classroom is a special education class. Mainstreamed students are often expected to keep up in classes with hearing students without additional resources. Often an interpreter is offered to the student. A parent of a deaf child might encounter the term “mainstreaming” when discussing their child’s education placement with the school. They may be considering whether to have their child placed in a mainstream classroom with hearing students or in a special education class specifically for deaf students.
