LEA stands for Local Education Agency. Basically it’s a fancy way of saying ‘school district’. In an IEP* meeting, the LEA is the representative of the school district that referred the student to special education services, and pays for them. A parent of a deaf child might encounter the term Local Education Agency (LEA) when discussing their child’s special education services and support in an Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting.
