About Family Deaf Coaches

Family support by LEAD-K Family Deaf Coach, who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing, will work closely with the family in their home language, offering guidance and support through every step of their journey.

Guiding Families of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children

LEAD-K Family Services offers Family Deaf Coaches who provide insights, emotional support, and practical advice, helping families navigate the challenges and joys of raising a Deaf or Hard of Hearing child. They serve as a trusted guide in helping families understand Deaf Culture, develop communication strategies, and strengthen family bonds.

Advocacy in School Settings

Educate family to ensure the family knows how to advocate for their child in school

Accessing Services

Teaching families how to request interpreters and other services

Home Communication Strategies

Providing communication strategies to enhance interactions at home

Regular Family Engagement

Meeting with families (including extended family) on a weekly basis

Visual Communication Cues

Modeling the use of visual cues when interacting with the child

Positive Identity Development

Helping families and children develop positive attitudes about being Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Sign Language Instruction

Teaching sign language vocabulary and engaging families in sign communication as requested

Sharing personal experiences of growing up and offering insights into life as a Deaf or Hard of Hearing person

Qualifications of the Family Deaf Coach

Family Deaf Coaches are carefully selected based on their ability to communicate, connect with families, and their comfort interacting with young children. They are respectful of each family’s communication choices and values.

In addition to passing background checks, Family Deaf Coaches typically have a college education and/or professional experience in sign language instruction and working with children and families.
